An Original Vintage Theatrical Paperbacked Window Card Movie Poster (WC; measures 14" x 22" [36 x 56 cm]) (Learn More)

Mockery, the 1927 Benjamin Christensen silent Russian Revolution romantic love triangle melodrama (a really unusual story, where Lon Chaney Sr. is a half-witted Russian peasant living in Siberia at the start of the Russian Revolution; he helps a woman who promises to greatly improve his situation in life, and after he does, only after being brutally beaten, he learns she is a Countess; he helps her back to the palace, where she "rewards" him by making him an assistant in the kitchen!; she has a boyfriend who is a Captain in the White Army, and Chaney lusts after her; when the Revolution occurs, he thinks he is now "her equal", and he attempts to rape her, but he is stopped, and the Countess speaks well of him and saves his life, telling the soldiers that he has been loyal!) starring Lon Chaney Sr., Barbara Bedford, Ricardo Cortez, Mack Swain, and Emily Fitzroy. Note that this movie clearly owes a great debt to Victor Hugo's "The Hunchback of Notre Dame", as the theme of the story is extremely similar!

If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know.
Important Added Info: Note that on this title and several other titles of the 1920s, MGM created two completely different window cards for the same movie. Some have speculated that one of the two cards is for an early re-release, but we have no way of knowing if this is correct, or which one predates the other. In the case of this movie, we auctioned the other style of window card one time (in 2015), and we have never before auctioned this style of window card (and since the dates on the card correspond to September 15 to 18, 1927, it would seem certain that this card is from 1927. If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here. Note that this poster has been paperbacked. What is paperbacking? This means the poster was backed onto a heavy paper backing (acid-free), that is similar in feel to that of the original poster (except heavier). It is a similar process to linenbacking, except that most collectors use linenbacking for one-sheets and paperbacking for half-sheets, inserts, window cards, and lobby cards.

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: fair to good. Prior to paperbacking, the window card was entirely separated across the top of the title, running through parts of Chaney's eyes and hair. It had other horizontal separation scattered in the rest of the card, with pinholes, tears, and paper loss around the edges. Overall, the window card was in fair condition prior to paperbacking. Given the card's extensive defects, it was pretty well restored, but you can clearly see signs of the above defects and the restoration of the above defects.
