An Original Vintage Theatrical Folded English Six-Sheet (called a twelve-sheet in England) Movie Poster (6sh; measures 77 1/2" x 88" [197 x 224 cm]) (Learn More) Johnny Apollo, the 1940 Henry Hathaway family relationship father/son romantic crime prison thriller ("'I'm Johnny Apollo! College man... Banker's son... Now a mobster!'"; "The father he idolized... In prison! All his wealthy friends turned against him! Only this girl guessed what was in his embittered heart!"; "I'll hock my soul to get what I want!"; "Original story by Samuel G. Engel and Hal Long") starring Tyrone Power Jr. (in the title role as Bob Cain/Johnny Apollo), Dorothy Lamour, Edward Arnold, Lloyd Nolan, Charley Grapewin, and Lionel Atwill NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this English poster! Note that this poster was almost certainly printed in the very late 1930s or in the early 1940s, at a time when England was undergoing a severe paper shortage (as was most of Europe) due to World War II. So they would take older unused posters, and print new posters on the backs of them! In this particular case, each section of the "Johnny Apollo" poster was printed on the back of the sections of different unknown multi-panel English posters! We have provided images of the back of each section, although of course, the winner of this auction will receive the single "Johnny Apollo" poster (in four sections, which have printing on the back, as shown). Note that this is one of seven English six-sheets and five English three-sheets that we are currently auctioning in 12 separate auctions. The posters were part of an amazing find of such posters that were auctioned in England several years ago. Our consignor purchased these twelve from that auction, and has consigned them to us. It will likely be many years before we again auction ANY of these twelve incredibly scarce posters! Condition: fair to good. Be sure to first read what is written above about this poster! The poster is fragile and has tears and tiny areas of paper loss on parts of the folds and borders, and may have darkening on folds or borders, and may have some bleed-through from printing on the back (for those that have printing on the back). Rather than attempt to describe individual defects, we would much rather you look at our super-sized image of the poster (especially since, on those from this collection that have printing on the back, you can also see the backs of some or all of the poster). Looking at those super-sized images should let you judge the exact condition of the poster. But clearly, all of the twelve posters from this remarkable collection are in urgent need of professional restoration, but after that is done by a talented restorer, they will look wonderful, and likely will not require much paint restoration!
