Date Sold 9/7/2017Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Paperbacked Half-Sheet Movie Poster (1/2sh; measures 22" x 28" [56 x 71 cm]) (Learn More) Charlie Chan's Greatest Case, the 1933 Hamilton MacFadden Asian detective crime mystery thriller ("From a story by Earl Derr Biggers") starring Warner Oland (in the title role as Charlie Chan), Heather Angel, John Warburton, Virginia Cherrill, Walter Byron, Frances Chan (as "Youngest Chan Daughter"), and Alan, David, Frank Dong (all billed as "Chan Son"), and Claude King. Note that the very first Charlie Chan movie was "House Without a Key" in 1925, with George Kuwa as Chan. In 1927, "The Chinese Parrot" (directed by Paul Leni) starred Sojin Kamiyama as Chan. In 1929 came the third movie, "Behind That Curtain", starring E.L. Park as Charlie Chan. 1931 brought "Charlie Chan Carries On", starring Warner Oland in the first of many movies with him as the Asian detective, and he was later replaced by Sidney Toler and then Roland Winters (there would ultimately be 47 Charlie Chan movies!). Of course, Charlie Chan is one of the most memorable literary creations ever, from author Earl Derr Biggers, but because politically correct-minded people have viewed the character as outdated, the movies are rarely shown, which is a shame! Important Added Info: Note that first release 1933 movie paper from this Charlie Chan movie is incredibly rare. We have only auctioned another example of this half-sheet and a one-sheet from this movie until we received this half-sheet! Also note that this poster has been paperbacked. What is paperbacking? This means the poster was backed onto a paper backing (acid-free), that is similar in feel to that of the original poster (except somewhat heavier). It is a similar process to linenbacking, except that most collectors use linenbacking for one-sheets and paperbacking for half-sheets, inserts, window cards, and lobby cards. Note that because this poster was paperbacked onto a thicker paper backing, it CAN'T be sent rolled (someone could conceivably roll it or try to do so, but we think it would have a strong chance of lessening its condition, so we will only send it in a large flat package, unless the buyer insists, and then they would be responsible for any damage). What IS paperbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. Prior to paperbacking, the poster was never folded. It had some pinholes around the edges and one near the center. It had a small circular hole in the chin of the man at middle right. It had a 1" tear in the left of the forehead of the woman at lower left. It had some light stains and smudges scattered throughout. Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to paperbacking. A really talented restorer expertly paperbacked the poster and did a great job repairing the above defects, and the poster displays really well! Learn More about condition grades
