An Original Vintage Linenbacked French Stage Play Poster (measures 25 1/4" x 35 1/4" [64 x 90 cm]) (Learn More)

Claudine, the 1910 French stage play opera production (based on the novels by "Willy & Colette Willy") which was held at the Theatre Du Moulin-Rouge in Paris, France. This poster features artwork of various characters by Clerice Freres (the Clarice Brothers). Note that the Claudine series consisted of four novels published from 1900 to 1904. The novels were written by Colette and her husband Henry Gauthier-Villars (better known by his nom-de-plume "Willy"). There has been much speculation over the degree of involvement of both Colette and Willy in the writing of the Claudine novels, particularly as Willy was known for often using ghostwriters. Colette is best-known for her 1944 work Gigi, which was the basis for the 1958 film.
Artist: Clerice Freres

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good to fine. The poster was never folded. It had a diagonal crease in the bottom right corner and pretty minor border wear. It once had a piece of tape on the back of the left of the top border. Overall, the poster was in very good to fine condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was nicely backed, and displays well! Note that either the restorer who mounted the poster did not leave any excess linen around the edges of the poster, or possibly the owner of the poster chose to carefully trim off the excess, so that the poster would fit in a frame.
