Date Sold 9/27/2022 Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. 9 Original Vintage Theatrical Color 8" x 10" [20 x 25 cm] Movie Stills (Learn More) My Fair Lady, the classic 1964 George Cukor (winner of the Best Director Academy Award for this film) England romantic love triangle rich-educated-man/poor-flower-girl musical ("The most loverly motion picture event of all!......"; "Based upon the play 'My Fair Lady'"; "From the play by Bernard Shaw"; adapted from the hit Broadway play by Lerner and Loewe, which itself was adapted from George Bernard Shaw's non-musical "Pygmalion"; winner of the Best Picture Academy Award) starring Audrey Hepburn (as Eliza Doolittle), Rex Harrison (winner of the Best Actor Academy Award for this film; as Henry Higgins), Stanley Holloway (nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for this film; as Alfred Doolittle), Wilfrid Hyde-White (as Colonel Pickering), Gladys Cooper (nominated for the Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for this film), Jeremy Brett (as Freddy Eynsford-Hill), and Theodore Bikel. Of course, the making of this movie was the center of a major controversy! When Hollywood went to make this movie adaptation of this hit play in 1964 (after it completed its Broadway run, where Julie Andrews had played Eliza Doolittle), they were fine with retaining the lead stars of the stage production EXCEPT for Julie Andrews, because she wasn't a big enough "name"! They replaced her with Audrey Hepburn, which was especially surprising, given that Miss Hepburn could not sing the part, and Marni Nixon was brought in to sing the songs for her (but that was uncredited and carefully kept under wraps, and Miss Nixon was not allowed to admit to it!). This was very unfortunate for Julie Andrews, but in an unusual twist of fate, she made Mary Poppins that year, and, while My Fair Lady swept the top Oscars with the Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor awards, Miss Andrews won the Best Actress award over Miss Hepburn (who wasn't even nominated!)! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: This nice color still has something unusual about it! What is it? It not only has the "PRINTED IN ENGLAND" and NSS information (see below for what this means), but it ALSO has a line of French on it (see below for what that means)! This is something that was done with this one set (for My Fair Lady), but not for any other titles we are currently aware of. Note that although this still was "printed in Great Britain", it has full NSS information. We have been told by an expert that Columbia and MGM had a number of their color stills printed in Great Britain in the late 1950s and the early 1960s (the years vary between the two studios), no doubt because the English color printing was better than the U.S. color printing at this time. However, they were printed in Great Britain to be used in the U.S. (we have heard from many collectors who saw these color stills in U.S. theaters at the time these movies were released, but we have not heard from any English collectors who saw them used in England at that time). In the late 1960s and 1970s some studios started printing color stills like these in Italy, surely for the same reason (because Italian printers had better color printing during those years). But those stills printed in Italy were for use in the U.S., as these stills printed in Great Britain were for use in the U.S. Also note that this still appears in every way to be original U.S. release EXCEPT that there is one very tiny line of French type in the lower right. It reads, "IMPRIME AUX ETATS-UNIS D'AMERIQUE". A collector has told us that he believes this means the still was printed for use in areas that included French-speaking parts of Canada, but that it WAS printed in the U.S., and that makes complete sense to us (and we have seen this on stills from the 1940s through the early 2000s, so it has certainly been done for an extremely long time)! So it is an original still from 1964, but it was printed partially for use in French-speaking Canada. If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here. Condition: very good.
