An Original Vintage Piece of Original Concept Art (measures 12 1/2" x 24" [32 x 61 cm]) (Learn More) Forbidden Planet, the classic 1956 Fred McLeod Wilcox science fiction (sci-fi) outer space robot monster thriller ("Amazing!"; "In Cinemascope and Color"; "Based on the story by Irving Block & Allen Adler"; very loosely adapted from William Shakespeare's "The Tempest"; about space men who journey to a distant planet, and they find that all the members of the original expedition have died, except for one man and his daughter, and they have discovered the secrets of a long lost civilization called "The Krell", which dwarfs anything humans have ever discovered, but there is a very dark side to those secrets that is soon revealed) starring Walter Pidgeon, Anne Francis, Leslie Nielsen, Warren Stevens, Jack Kelly, Richard Anderson, Earl Holliman (as the cook, who was put in the movie for comic relief), Robby the Robot (billed as "Introducing Robby the Robot"), James Drury, and Frankie Darro (who was inside the robot suit until he was fired early in the production for showing up inebriated and almost damaging the expensive prop). Note that after Robby the Robot appeared in this movie, he had another movie role in "The Invisible Boy", and then he appeared in a slightly modified version as the robot in TV's "Lost in Space". On November 21, 2017, the original "Robby the Robot" was auctioned, and it sold for $5.375 million! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that when the first MGM Grand Hotel opened in Las Vegas in 1973, someone had the idea of getting movie memorabilia from the legendary studio that was owned by the same people, and sending it from Hollywood to Las Vegas, where it would be sold in a memorabilia store within the hotel/casino! The people in charge of this had no clue what memorabilia was valuable and what was not, and along with many thousands of low value stills and lobby cards, they also sent some really fine memorabilia! Included in that was this great original concept art for the classic movie Forbidden Planet that had been created in 1956, prior to the movie being filmed. Our consignor was lucky enough to visit the memorabilia store in the MGM Grand when it still had items like this, and he happily purchased this! Soon after, someone connected with the store realized that what they were doing made no sense, and they stopped selling anything of value! Our consignor does not have a certificate of authenticity, but this concept art (which was created on heavy art board, and later attached to a 15x27 mat) has a sticker on the back that reads "The Nostalgia Shop, MGM Grand Hotel, Las Vegas, Nevada". Condition: good to very good. The production art has much scuffing and staining in the bottom blank area, very slightly extending into the bottom of the art. It has some tiny areas of surface paper loss at the top of that staining, with a small tear in the left of the bottom of the production art. It has a line of small areas of surface paper loss on the left edge of the bottom half of the production art, just slightly entering the art, and three tiny areas of surface paper loss in the top left blank area. It would seem likely that some kind of snipe or overlay was attached over the entire bottom area and to the left area, and when those were removed, they caused the above staining and surface paper loss. Since most of the defects are in the blank borders and only slightly touching the production art, we could totally understand the new owner simply framing and displaying it as it is (perhaps in its original mat), or one could certainly have restoration performed. Either way, the new owner will have a remarkable artifact from the production of one of the justifiably most famous science fiction films ever made! Learn More about condition grades
