An Original Vintage Theatrical Folded Stock Insert Movie Poster (measures 14" x 36" [36 x 91 cm]) (Learn More) an undated 1930s Gene Autry stock poster created by Republic Pictures for use by theaters showing Gene Autry movies in the 1930s. Theaters showing Gene Autry movies would order this stock poster (which was sometimes sent blank, and sometimes sent with titles of specific movies overprinted in the bottom area). When a poster was sent blank, the theater would either place a snipe in the blank area, overprint the title themselves, or hand write in the name of the particular Gene Autry movie they were showing that week, and then they could reuse the poster with a different snipe at a later time, thus getting many posters for the price of one! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that the 1935 film Tumbling Tumbleweeds was Gene Autry's first picture for Republic, and it came right after The Phantom Empire as Mascot Pictures ended and merged into Republic with several other studios. Nate Levine (who was in charge of B-Western and serial output) had a falling out with Ken Maynard and signed Gene Autry for a multiple picture deal for the new studio. Likely this stock insert was made right at that time with the knowledge that several pictures would be coming after Tumbling Tumbleweeds as part of that deal. We have seen this stock poster promoting Autry's Oh, Susanna!, Ride, Ranger, Ride and The Singing Vagabond. However, we have never seen a dedicated first release insert for any of these films. It is quite likely that there never was a dedicated insert and this stock poster was the only insert created for the films. Condition: good to very good. There is approximately 2" of separation in the right end of the bottom horizontal fold and there is an area of paper loss in the right of the bottom edge of the poster (repaired with tape from the back). There are a few stains and smudges scattered throughout the poster (mostly around the edges). Learn More about condition grades
