An Original Vintage Campaign Book (measures 9 1/4" x 12 1/4" [23 x 31 cm]; 48 pages) (Learn More) 20th Century-Fox 1952, the special 1952 campaign book featuring images and information for 20th Century-Fox movies for that year. 20th Century-Fox was riding high in 1951 and 1952 with a lot of excellent movies, including David and Bathsheba, The Day the Earth Stood Still, PLUS they had Marilyn Monroe under contract, and they were starting to see how valuable she was! So they did something that studios rarely did, which is that after they published their 1951-52 campaign book, they did not wait an entire year to publish another, but instead they published this special 1952 issue in February of 1952 (and then a few months later, they published the regular 1952-53 issue, thus adding in this extra special issue). Because by February 1952, Marilyn Monroe had started to gain real prominence and because 20th Century-Fox had her under contract, one would THINK that she would be prominently included in this campaign book, but amazingly, Fox STILL had not yet realized how wonderful she was! At this time, they had only added her to several of their minor movies, and they also gave her an important role in "Don't Bother To Knock". In this book, she is included full-length in a bathing suit on a page titled "New Stars of 1952", and they mention that she "received more publicity in the past six months than any long established top star". She is also pictured and mentioned in a small ad for "Don't Bother To Knock", and she is pictured in a tiny ad on the back cover for "Let's Make It Legal", but otherwise she is not mentioned! Later in this year, Fox would be rushing her into virtually every movie they could, and by the following year, she was their top star, but in February 1952, she was still not recognized as being a major star! Note that this magazine is officially a special issue of "Dynamo" magazine, which was a 20th Century-Fox studio publication. We don't know when Fox started publishing this magazine, but since the earliest one we have seen is from 1944 and says "Vol XIV, No. 9", we would imagine it started in the early 1930s. We know that most issues of Dynamo were small (both in size and number of pages) without color, but they made several deluxe special issues, including this one. When these special issues are large with many pages, we call them "campaign books", because they clearly took the place of the studio yearbook that year (and the covers indicate that). There is tiny paper loss at the spine and some smudges on the covers. Otherwise, this book is in pretty nice condition! Learn More about condition grades
