The Memphis Belle: A Story of a Flying Fortress, the 1944 William Wyler World War II (WWII) B-17 United States Air Force military airplane aviation documentary ("Brave young men who rode on the wings of victory"; "Fly and fight with the crew on an actual bombing mission over Germany!"; "Just one plane... and one crew. In one squadron. In one group. Of one wing. Of one air force. Out of fifteen United States Army Air Forces."; "Photographed by U.S. 8th Air Force Photographers and Combat Crew Members"; "Produced by U.S. 8th Air Force Photographic Section In Cooperation with Army Air Forces First Motion Picture Unit"; "For Office of War Information Through War Activities Committee - Motion Picture Industry") starring (all as themselves) Robert Morgan, Vince Evans, Jacob L. Devers, Ira C. Eaker, Haywood Hansell, Arthur Kennedy, King George VI, Queen Elizabeth, and Col. Stanley Ray. Note that this movie showed the flight of one specific plane (the Memphis Belle) flying on a bombing mission over Germany, and enduring much anti-aircraft fire during its mission. The documentary was intended to inspire those on the Home Front into seeing that the war was being won, and the director was famed director William Wyler, who had enlisted in World War II. He was actually on the plane filming during its mission, and the plane was hit by anti-aircraft fire, which injured him and caused him to lose most of his hearing in one ear! In 1990, a fictional version of this movie was made with actors Matthew Modine, Eric Stoltz, Sean Astin, and Harry Connick Jr. in the lead roles. Note that this is justifiably one of the most famous war documentary films ever made, filmed on the actual mission (although, because the plane was hit, a few of the scenes had to be recreated after the plane returned, in Los Angeles).
