The Great Gabbo, the 1929 James Cruze ventriloquist dummy romantic musical melodrama ("The gigantic all-dialog-singing-dancing-dramatic spectacle"; written by Ben Hecht based on his story "The Rival Dummy"; a story of a ventriloquist who is going insane, and he has an assistant who loves him, but his dummy comes between them and drives her away, after which he becomes completely mad) starring Erich von Stroheim (in the title role as Gabbo), Betty Compson, Donald Douglas, Marjorie Kane (billed as "Margie (Babe) Kane"), and Marbeth Wright. Note that this was von Stroheim's first movie after he almost bankrupted Paramount Pictures with his "Queen Kelly"! After that, he could not be hired as a director, so he took this acting job, which proved to be only one of many memorable acting performances. Note that this basic story was reused in one of the segments of "Dead of Night", and also in "Magic"! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography.
