An Original Vintage Theatrical Folded German Movie Poster (measures 35 3/4" x 54" [91 x 137 cm]) (Learn More) Die Wasserteufel von Hieflau (literally translates to "The Water Devil of Hieflau"), the 1932 Erich Kober, Eugen Schufftan & Franz Herterich German canoe folding boat romantic love triangle melodrama starring Hilde Gebuehr (also known as Hilde Gebahr and as Hilde Gebuhr), Willy Clever, Dina Gralla, Walter Edthofer, and Paul Heidemann. There are several real mysteries about this movie! Apparently, folding boats were very big in Germany at this time, and this movie was made to exploit the interest in this then-current craze, using teenagers using folding boats on the English Channel in their plot. The young actress who played the lead, Hilde Gebuehr, had never been in a movie before, but she was the daughter of a well known German actor, Otto Gebuehr. She made two movies the following two years, and then retired from acting at the age of 24, and she passed away in Germany in 1945, but her father lived until 1954. We could find no further information about her, or why she retired so quickly or why she died at the end of World War II. It also appears this movie was never released in the U.S. If anyone knows more about this movie, please e-mail us and we will post it here. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this is a very rare "country of origin" poster from Germany from before World War II, which we have never auctioned before (or ANYTHING else from this movie). There are very few German movie posters from before World War II in existence (because of the massive paper shortages in Germany during World War II), and most of those few are in museums. Condition: good. The poster was placed on to a very thin linen backing shortly after being printed, and the linen was wrapped over the front and sewn. The purpose was to reinforce the poster, so that it would survive, when it was passed from theater to theater, and when it was put up on walls and taken down. Such posters can be professionally removed from the original linen and placed on to a proper linen backing. I have done this to several such posters, and they end up looking wonderful, but please bear in mind this cost (or live with it as it is). Learn More about condition grades
