An Original Vintage Linenbacked French Stage Play Poster (measures 29 1/4" x 47" [74 x 119 cm]) (Learn More) Jeanne d'Arc (literally translates to "Joan of Arc"), the 1890s (perhaps 1899) French stage play production (based on the life of French heroine Joan of Arc) starring Sarah Bernhardt (in the title role). This poster features art of Bernhardt holding a banner in the midst of battle. There are two versions of this poster with the main difference being the depiction of Bernhardt's face and hair. The story goes that Bernhardt was dissatisfied with the original version which featured her looking skyward with curly hair, and she had Grasset create another version which featured her looking forward with straight hair. One version of the artwork was later included in the Maitres de l'Affiche (literally translates to "Masters of the Poster") collection of French art prints created by Jules Cheret during the Belle Epoque in Paris, France. Note that Sarah Bernhardt was a legendary French stage actresses who was born in 1844 in Paris. The daughter of poor Jewish parents, she acted while a student in her teens, but later became the mistress of a Belgian prince, and had a child by him. The prince's family forced him to break up with Bernhardt, and she became a courtesan, and then began acting again in 1866. By the 1870s Bernhardt was France's leading actress, and toured all over Europe and in New York, earning her the nickname "The Divine Sarah". She made her first movie in 1900, and only appeared in a total of seven films. An old injury eventually forced her to have her right leg amputated in 1914, but she continued to perform until her passing in 1923 at the age of 78. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography.
