An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked German Movie Poster (measures 24" x 33 3/4" [61 x 86 cm]) (Learn More) Das Gewehr uber (literally translates to "Shoulder Arms"), the 1939 Jurgen von Alten German World War II (WWII) military Nazi propaganda melodrama (about German farmers in Australia who return to Germany to join the Army; the movie was made just as Germany invaded Poland) starring Rudi Godden, Rolf Moebius, Carsta Lock, Hilde Schneider, and Charlott Daudert. Note that this is a "forbidden" movie. This refers to around 60 movies that were made in Germany between 1933 and 1945, during the time the Nazis were in power in Germany. These movies are considered to be propaganda movies, which glorify the Nazi regime and their ideals. Immediately after World War II, a list of over 100 movies that were made between 1933 and 1945 was created, and those movies were not allowed to be shown at any time in Germany or Austria. Over the next decade, around 60 of those movies (including this one) were taken off the list so that they are allowed to be shown (but rarely are), and those movies are known as "forbidden movies", because even though they can now be shown, they could not be shown at all in the years right after World War II. The remaining 40 or so movies are known as "conditional" movies, because they are still not allowed to be shown in Germany or Austria, even in the present day, with the sole exception being when they are shown in an educational context, like at a university, and a speaker talks before and after the movie. All of the "forbidden" movies and "conditional" movies glorify Nazism in some respect, or they were created by directors or featured actors who were prominently associated with the Nazi party. It appears this movie was never released in the U.S. If anyone knows more about this movie, please e-mail us and we will post it here. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this German poster, which is a "country of origin" poster for this German movie! Not only that, but we have almost never auctioned any first release German posters from "forbidden" movies! This is likely because very few of these survived, due to paper shortages, but also because it is extremely likely the vast majority of any that survived were destroyed right after the war, due to their association with the Nazis. Also note that this poster mentions Gaufilmstelle NSDAP at lower-left. The Gaufilmstelle were the Nazi's regional propaganda film distribution offices spread throughout Germany (and later in some occupied countries). In order to be able to provide film propaganda to rural areas where there were no cinemas, the district film offices had 300 trucks (and two trains), which were equipped with modern projection facilities. What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good. The poster had two vertical folds and two horizontal folds, with varying amounts of paper loss scattered on parts of the folds. It also had some tiny paper loss and tears in the top border. It has red staining in parts of the poster that could be intentional, could be a printing defect, or could be regular staining. Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to linenbacking. The restorer backed the poster "in the European style", meaning that they did not do restoration to the defects described above. One could certainly have restoration performed to this poster, with or without re-backing it. One would prefer a better condition example, but it is quite likely that no better condition example could be found, or maybe even exist! Learn More about condition grades
