An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Australian Daybill Movie Poster (db; measures 13 1/4" x 35 1/4" [34 x 90 cm]) (Learn More)

One Sunday Afternoon, the 1933 Stephen Roberts romantic love triangle dentist melodrama ("A Picture..... After Your Own Heart"; about a small town dentist who looks back to when he was young, and wonders if the girl that he didn't marry wasn't the one he was meant to be with) starring Gary Cooper, Fay Wray, Neil Hamilton, Frances Fuller, Roscoe Karns, and Jane Darwell. Note that this movie was remade in 1941 with James Cagney, Olivia De Havilland, and Rita Hayworth in the lead roles (with the new title "The Strawberry Blonde"), and again in 1948 with Dennis Morgan, Janis Paige, and Dorothy Malone with the original title.

Artist: Richardson Studio
Important Added Info: Note that we have only previously auctioned one example of this Australian daybill, and that was 10 years ago. That example has now been reconsigned to us, so this is still the only example we have ever auctioned!

Note that this is one of an amazing collection of 62 linenbacked Australian daybills that all have great art from Richardson Studio (or John Richardson, before he became "Richardson Studio"!), which many collectors feel have the best art and design of any Australian daybills, and are highly sought after by collectors. These were accumulated by a very dedicated collector over many years, and they are now being all offered at once (in 62 separate auctions), so this is a wonderful opportunity to obtain one or many of these daybills, many of which rarely are offered for sale or at auction.

Also note that, while this poster was printed in Australia, it was specifically made to be used in New Zealand. This was not an uncommon practice and we have seen many examples. These posters often lack the printed rating which can be found on the Australian version of the poster.

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good. The poster originally measured 15" x 40". It had its left and right blank borders trimmed off, slightly extending into the edge of the image in some areas, and all of the blank top area (normally used for play dates), and it now measures 13 1/2" x 35 1/4". The poster also had a 1" x 6" area of paper loss in the upper left edge of the image, starting at the top of the "A" of "AFTERNOON" and running down to the very top of the "N" of "NEIL". There were some tears around the edges, including a 7" tear in the top center of the poster and some small tears, smudges, and tiny paper loss scattered in the image. Overall, the poster was in fair to good condition prior to linenbacking, but much of the image was in pretty good condition. Given its defects described above, the poster was nicely backed, and the image area looks great, but the restorer did not replace the missing borders, and left it its trimmed size. However, it will display nicely on the new owner's wall.
