An Original Vintage Linenbacked French World War I Poster (measures 31 1/2" x 47 3/4" [80 x 121 cm]) (Learn More) We Deliver The Goods, the 1918 French World War I (WWI) poster promoting the United States S.O.S. (Services of Supply), and featuring Neyan Moran McMein art of a soldier carrying warships, airplanes, cannons, tanks and more on his back as he crosses a battlefield. Something about this poster is that it is entirely in English, and yet it was printed in France. Why was that? We found a reference to this poster in a book that stated that the general in charge of the S.O.S. (see below) wanted to reassure the French people that the U.S. was working hard to bring supplies via ship to France, and he ordered this poster created, and then had lots of them printed, and they were posted throughout France to get the word out! We imagine that none of these posters were sent back to the United States, and it appears that very few of them survive (we found reference to a couple of museums that have this poster, but otherwise we found none searching the internet.) Note that the Services of Supply referred to on the poster was the support chain of the American Expeditionary Forces in France, England, Italy and the Netherlands during World War I. In charge of the S.O.S. was Major General James G. Harbord and Brigadier General Charles G. Dawes. After the war, Harbord became president of RCA, and Dawes pursued a political career (eventually serving as Vice President to Calvin Coolidge) and was a co-recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1925 for his work on the Dawes Plan for World War I reparations Artist: Neyan Moran McMein Important Added Info: Note that, as stated above, this is an extremely rare poster that was printed in France by the U.S. military. We have never auctioned it before! What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. Prior to linenbacking the had darkened. it had paper loss at the upper crossfold and 1/2" x 4" of paper loss at the middle crossfold with some small tears and small areas of the rest of the middle crossfold. it had small paper loss of the top right of the second "S" of "S.O.S." It had some tiny paper loss on portions of other foldlines and some small tears and tiny bits of paper loss in portions of the borders. Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was well backed, but you can see signs of the above defects and the restoration of the above defects, although this very rare and very cool poster will display fantastically on the new owners wall!
