Robertson France escape artist crime murder mystery romantic melodrama ("The romantic thriller of thrillers"; based on the novel 'Cheri-Bibi' by Gaston Leroux; about a famous escape artist who is falsely charged with a murder, and of course, he is incredibly difficult to keep in prison, and he desperately wants to escape so that he can clear his name, and of course, he does!) starring John Gilbert (as Cheri-Bibi, the escape artist), Leila Hyams, Lewis Stone, Jean Hersholt, C. Aubrey Smith, and Natalie Moorhead. Note that this John Gilbert sound movie, like all his sound movies, completely dispels the myth that he had a high-pitched speaking voice, which ended his career! Actually, he had a fine speaking voice, and there is much speculation as to what it was that actually ended his career, and that can be found in various places on the Internet, but it was definitely not his voice! Also note that the source novel for this movie was written in 1913 by Gaston Leroux, who had three years earlier written one of the most famous novels of all time, "Le fantome de l'Opera", known in English-speaking countries as "The Phantom of the Opera".
