An Original 1947 (from the first release of this movie in Belgium) Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Belgian Movie Poster (measures 14 1/4" x 19 1/2" [36 x 50 cm]) (Learn More) Les Enfants du Paradis (released in the U.S. in 1947 as "Children of Paradise") the classic 1945 Marcel Carne French epic theater performing arts romantic love triangle comedy melodrama (covering many years in the lives of many people, including an actress and a famous mime, and their many interlocking relationships; this is rightly considered in the handful of greatest French movies ever made!) starring Arletty, Jean-Louis Barrault, Pierre Brasseur, Pierre Renoir, and Maria Casares. Note that this movie was made immediately after France was liberated from the Nazis in late 1944, and it premiered in Paris in March of 1945, which makes it all the more remarkable! It did not go into general release in France for an entire year after, in March of 1946. It was then slowly released all over Europe, and it opened in America in November of 1946 and in New York City in February of 1947! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that we know this poster was used in Belgium in April of 1947, because there are play dates in the bottom of the blank top area that give that date. We are not 100% sure when this movie was first released in Belgium, but it was released all over Europe in 1946 and 1947, and while this poster was clearly used in April of 1947, it would seem certain that it was printed for the first Belgian release, whenever that occurred. Also note that this is an incredibly rare poster, with wonderful artwork of the three leads! We have never auctioned it before. If the image looks familiar to you, it is because there have been numerous repros of it sold all over the world. In Belgium and France at this time, there was a huge paper shortage during World War II, and so they printed many of the movie posters at the time on the back of already printed posters or maps (a practice pretty common in Belgium and France during World War II and for the next couple of years, when there were huge paper shortages). The poster offered here was printed on the back of a map and it very slightly shows through in various parts of the poster (mostly as a sort of light "ghosting"). See our image to better see exactly what bleed-through there is (it is truly not very noticeable at all; see below). Also note that this poster has been trimmed and it now measures 14 1/4" x 19 1/2" [36 x 50 cm]. What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster originally had a blank top that was neatly trimmed off (this is commonly done with Belgian posters, similar to how the blank top is trimmed off of U.S. window cards). The poster was printed on the back of part of a map (see above). It is very fortunate that the poster has no white background areas, and because of that, the printing from the back barely shows through at all to the front. It is most noticeable in the woman's skin and very slightly in the actors' faces, but even there you need to be looking at those areas to be aware of it. There is slight scuffing in the right of the forehead of the woman. The poster was folded twice horizontally across the original middle and once vertically, and it had very minor wear on those folds and in the borders. It once had a tax stamp in the top right corner that was removed, and there is slight scuffing in that area, with the remnants of a stamp in the blank corner. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was nicely backed, and displays well. I would think any collector would be very happy to display this great poster on their wall! Learn More about condition grades
