An Original Vintage Unfolded Two-Sided German Stage Play Poster (measures 22 3/4" x 34 1/4" [58 x 87 cm]) (Learn More) Die Schlacht (literally translates to "The Battle"), the 1976 German stage play production (of the work by Heiner Muller) which was held in October at the Nationaltheater in Mannheim, Germany. Note that this poster features John Heartfield reprint art of bloody axes tied together to make a swastika! Heartfield's 1934 savage image of a swastika of axes dripping blood (titled Blut und Eisen [Blood and Iron]) is a reference to the fact The Third Reich often referenced earlier militaristic German history. Otto von Bismarck's 19th century quote, "The great questions of the day will not be settled by means of speeches and majority decisions but by iron and blood" is echoed in this montage.
