An Original Vintage Linenbacked Political Campaign Poster (measures 21 1/2" x 32 1/2" [55 x 83 cm]) (Learn More) William McKinley was a soldier, lawyer and politician from the 1860s to 1901. He served as the 25th President of the United States from March 4, 1897. McKinley led the nation to victory in the Spanish/American War, raised protective tariffs to promote American industry, and maintained the nation on the gold standard in a rejection of inflationary proposals. McKinley was assassinated by Leon Czolgosz in September 1901, six months into his second term, at the age of 58. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: What a wonderful poster this is! It is an actual presidential campaign poster from 1896, from President McKinley's first winning campaign (it is dated by the printer in the bottom right corner). It has a wonderful image of a larger than life McKinley, with great taglines and slogans above and below him, and there is a sunrise in the background, no doubt signifying that he will bring the dawning of a new day for American prosperity! The poster was printed on a linen-like material, and that linen material was mounted to a thin linen backing. We have never auctioned this poster before. What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: fair. The poster (which was printed on a linen-like material) has significant deterioration in the top one-quarter, and some paper loss around the edges, with some in the top center in the blank area above McKinley's head. The poster was mounted onto a thin linen, no doubt to stop its deterioration, but no restoration was performed. If I owned this wonderful poster, I would surely have it removed from the thin linen and have it properly restored, after which it will display incredibly, although it might be difficult to match the linen-like material that the poster was created on, so the restored areas might be very evident, but it is fortunate that a large portion of the damage is in blank areas or border areas. Please read our description above and look at our super-sized image before placing a bid on this wonderful (and likely incredibly scarce) poster. Learn More about condition grades
