An Original Vintage Linenbacked German Magic Show Poster (measures 36" x 53 1/4" [91 x 135 cm]) (Learn More) Kassner, the 1931 German magic poster promoting a show by Alois Kassner in which he makes the elephant Toto disappear. This poster features art of a rearing elephant and Kassner in a tuxedo waving a magic wand. In attempting to research this poster, we found a site that says that in the height of Germany's depression in the early 1930s, the members of the circus killed and ate this elephant! If anyone knows more about this poster, please e-mail us and we will post it here. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good. The poster had small paper loss at some crossfolds and some creases, tears, and tiny paper loss on parts of some foldlines. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was well backed with slight excess around the edges. At some point after it was backed, it was roughly handled, and there is now a 10" horizontal crease in the head of the elephant, and the poster is now "lifting" in that area. I don't know if a restorer can repair this without re-backing the poster, but I think they could. Please do not bid on this poster unless you can accept its defects described above or are willing to pay to have further restoration. Learn More about condition grades
