eMoviePoster.comAuction History Result 4j271 DICK TRACY pressbook 1937 Ralph Byrd, Chester Gould comic strip art, serial, ultra rare! Date Sold 3/5/2019Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Pressbook (pb; measures 13 1/4" x 18 1/4" [34 x 46 cm]; 26 pages) (Learn More) Dick Tracy, the 1937 Alan James & Ray Taylor detective mystery crime action serial ("A Republic Serial"; "Ace G-man... Waging a One-Man war on crime!"; "15 action episodes"; "Based on cartoon strip by Chester Gould"; "Original Story by Morgan Cox and George Morgan") starring Ralph Byrd (in the title role as Dick Tracy), Kay Hughes, Smiley Burnette, Lee Van Atta (as Junior), Francis X. Bushman (as Chief Clive Anderson), and John Picorri (as Moloch). Note that this was the very first Dick Tracy movie! It is surprising that it took six years for it to reach the screen, but once it did, it proved very popular and was followed by three more serials over the next four years, and then after a four year break, the first Dick Tracy feature film was released, which again proved extremely popular, and there were three sequels to that. There were animated cartoons on TV in the 1950s and in 1990, Warren Beatty made a live action movie! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that this pressbook is extremely rare. We have never auctioned it before! Note that we have provided several images from this pressbook, always including the cover and the poster pages, and of course, the winner of this auction will receive the entire single pressbook we are auctioning (plus any supplements or heralds described above)! Note that we are auctioning 74 pressbooks in this Part II of our March Major Auction. 62 of those come from a single collector who was attempting to assemble EVERY pressbook from movie serials that were based on either comic book or comic strip characters, and he spent many decades doing so, and he came very close to getting every one there is! These include many that we have never auctioned in all our years of auctioning, and may well never auction them again! This is a very rare opportunity for collectors to acquire these ultra rare pressbooks (which are even more rare than the posters from these same serials, likely because they were sent to very few theaters, and likely most of those theaters immediately threw them out). If one started to try to assemble a similar collection without purchasing any of these pressbooks, they would likely spend many years before they could acquire even a small percentage of them. That is how rare these are! Condition: fair, WITH CUTS. Someone cut out the name "DICK TRACY", which was in tiny letters on the cast list on page 4. They put tape where the cut was, but the tape has yellowed. The facing page had an image of Dick Tracy in the lower right and an image of a Lee Van Atta (Tracy Jr.) pointing a toy gun on the reverse. That area was cut out by someone and someone decades ago located another example of the pressbook and made Photostats of both sides of that page, and then taped in the missing area in the lower right of those two pages on two separate copies that were glued together. So you see everything that was there, but the images in the lower right and left of those two pages are replaced. The pressbook also has some light water staining in the right of all pages (you can see the printing through it and the pages are not stuck together). There are stains scattered over the cover, with paint stains in the upper left, and the covers are separated at the spine. It was folded down the middle at one time. We could re-fold it for shipping, but it seems a shame to do so, so we will only do so if the new owner requests that we do so. Obviously, one would much prefer to find a complete example of this pressbook, but it is unbelievably rare, and it might take many decades to find. However, bear in mind this pressbook's considerable defects before bidding on it (although realize that it has 26 pages, so almost all of the pressbook is present, including the color covers).
