Date Sold 4/29/2012Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Insert Movie Poster (measures 14" x 36" [36 x 91 cm]) (Learn More) Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein (released in other English-speaking countries as "Abbott and Costello Meet the Ghosts"), the 1948 Charles T. Barton monster horror spoof comedy ("It's a grand New idea for Fun!"; the eighth Universal Frankenstein movie, and this time they added their #1 comedy team to both liven up the series, and to inject comedy; many people fondly remember this as their favorite of the 1940s Frankenstein movies!; "Jeepers! The Creepers are after Bud and Lou!"; "The laughs are MONSTERous! Bud and Lou are in a stew when they tangle with the Titans of Terror!"; "The monsters of menace vs the masters of Mirth!") starring Bud Abbott, Lou Costello (Abbott and Costello), Lon Chaney Jr. ("The Wolf Man played by Lon Chaney"), Bela Lugosi (returning as Dracula after being long absent from the role; "Dracula played by Bela Lugosi"), Glenn Strange (in the title role, playing the Frankenstein monster; "The Monster played by Glenn Strange"), Lenore Aubert, Jane Randolph, Frank Ferguson, Charles Bradstreet, and Vincent Price (in a cute cameo, as the voice of The Invisible Man at the end of the movie!) NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good. The poster had many smudges and long scuffs (or possibly pencil marks) scattered down the center, including in Lugosi's face at top center and in Bud and Lou's face at center, but few in the Frankenstein and Werewolf faces (it looks like some kid scribbled in those areas with a pencil). There were some faint smudges scattered throughout the rest of the poster and some small tears in the borders and a pinhole in each corner. Overall, the poster was in fair to good condition prior to linenbacking. A talented restorer linenbacked it without any excess, and they did very careful restoration to the above defects. They did NOT paint over large portions of the poster, as some restorers might have done, but they instead did very careful restoration solely to the above defects, making them far less noticeable, and from any reasonable viewing distance, the poster displays pretty well (but you can clearly see signs of the defects when you look closely at the poster). This poster is rarely offered, and when it is, it sells for huge amounts, but please read the above carefully and study our super-sized image before placing a bid on this great poster! Note that at some point after the poster was backed, it suffered a tiny bit of surface paper loss on the horizontal fold below the word "BUD" (and any restorer could easily touch up that tiny area without re-backing the poster).
