Date Sold 9/18/2018Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Unfolded Window Card Movie Poster (WC; measures 14" x 22" [36 x 56 cm]) (Learn More) The Duke Steps Out, the 1929 James Cruze college boxing sports romantic comedy ("It's a knock-out!"; "Story by Lucian Cary"; about a millionaire's son who is a talented boxer, and he is on his way to becoming champion when he happens to see a beautiful college co-ed, and on an impulse, he enrolls in college so that he can romance her; it is not until the climax of the movie, when he is fighting for the championship and Crawford is listening to the fight on the radio that she finally realizes her boyfriend is the champ) starring William Haines (in the title role as Duke), Joan Crawford, Karl Dane, Tenen Holtz, Edward J. Nugent, and Jack Roper. Note that this is a "lost" film which means that no surviving copies are thought to exist (but the soundtrack discs have survived). Also note that Karl Dane and George K. Arthur appeared in two of the same movies in the mid-1920s, and then in 1927, MGM paired the huge Dane with the diminutive Arthur as a comedy team in 1927's "Rookies", and they were a huge hit, and over the next four years, they appeared in a total of 17 comedies as a Laurel & Hardy-like slapstick comedy team. But Dane had a very thick accent, and he could not make the transition to sound movies, and he had a few bit parts given to him by friends, but by 1934, he was washed up, and he bought a hot dog cart which he displayed outside of the MGM gates! Apparently, he reasonably found this extremely depressing, and he soon committed suicide. The following year, Arthur retired from movies and became a Broadway producer among other careers, and he lived until 1985, when he was 86 years old! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that first release 1929 movie paper from this movie is incredibly rare. We have only auctioned a few lobby cards from this movie (but no posters) until we received this window card! Also note that the card measures very slightly under 14" x 22" (an extremely tiny amount in each direction!) and has no left, right, or bottom blank borders, but it has NOT been trimmed (this was done at a time when MGM was experimenting with having as few borders as possible). Also note that this window card was never folded. Often window cards would be folded across the middle, because that would make them 11" x 14", and they could then be sent with standard folded posters. Most collectors put an added value on a window card that has never been folded. Condition: fair to good. The card has stains around the edges and in the top blank area, with more in the lower right corner. It has many stains on the back of the right three-quarters of the card, but fortunately, they do not show through to the front. The card has a 3" tear in the lower right border and small to tiny paper loss in the corners. The card is fragile, but after proper restoration, it will look fantastic!
