An Original Vintage Linenbacked World War I Poster (measures 30" x 40" [76 x 102 cm]) (Learn More)

Another Notch Chateau Thierry, the 1917 U.S. World War I (WWI) poster ("U.S. Marines") featuring Adolph Treidler artwork of a smiling U.S. Marine Corps soldier carving a new notch into his rifle stock (which was a common practice to mark enemy kills). The U.S. Marine Corps was founded in 1775 as the "fighting branch" of the U.S. Navy. Most people think of the Marines are a completely separate branch of the military, but actually, they are still closely tied to the Navy (although many Marines don't like to think about that)! Note that the Battle of Chateau-Thierry was fought in 1918 and was one of the first actions of the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) under General John J. 'Black Jack' Pershing.

Artist: Adolph Treidler
Important Added Info: Note that we have only previously auctioned three examples of this war poster!

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster had a 12" tear near the top center running into the left of the soldier's helmet and down into his cheek. It had some small tears and paper loss in parts of the blank borders and some smudges and scuffs in the white background areas. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was pretty well backed, but you can see signs of the above defects and the restoration of the above defects. Also, after the poster was backed, it was roughly handled, and there are now some creases in the lower right white background to the right of the bottom of the image.
