An Original Vintage Theatrical Paperbacked Half-Sheet Movie Poster (1/2sh; measures 22" x 28" [56 x 71 cm]) (Learn More) Howard Hawks' The Thing From Another World!, the classic 1951 Christian Nyby science fiction (sci-fi) monster horror thriller ("The Thing from another world!"; "How did it get here?"; "Natural or Supernatural?"; "Howard Hawks' Astounding Movie"; "Look out... it's The Thing from another world!"; produced by Howard Hawks; based on the story by John W. Campbell, best known for being the editor of Astounding Science Fiction!) starring Kenneth Tobey, Margaret Sheridan, Robert Cornthwaite, Dewey Martin, Paul Frees, John Dierkes, Eduard Franz, James Arness (in the title role as The Thing From Another World!), William Self, and Billy Curtis (as the miniature "Thing" in the final sequence when the monster appears to shrink). Note that this movie had a very unusual poster campaign, where the letters of the title were made to look like body parts ("blood and guts"!), with wires coming off of the letters. Almost all the posters had this basic design. The pressbook calls all of them "teaser" posters and says "This display material was designed for an advance teaser campaign, as well as for general use". So obviously, they intentionally wanted to have the posters not reveal much about the movie, as a way to get people interested and get them into the theater. Important Added Info: There is an unusual story behind how we came to be consigned this poster for this auction. Here's what happened: After we auctioned a War of The Worlds style B half-sheet (for $20,777), one of our consignors looked at his example of that poster on the wall (which he had framed over ten years before), and to his dismay, he realized it had faded over those ten years. Worse yet, he had it framed side-by-side with an Invasion of the Body Snatchers style B half-sheet, as well as this poster, and all three had faded (the framer he had used was an expensive one, and they had assured him that they had used high quality UV Plexiglas, but they had saved money by using non UV instead). After it completely sunk in what had happened, he thought it would make sense to consign all three of them to us, so that he could put the sad affair out of his mind (the framer who did not use UV glass is out of business, so he has no one to sue). While the reds in this poster have indeed faded to where they are now a light orange, the poster still displays well, and it will be up to our bidders to determine how much of a detraction this defect is (and this really IS a very rare poster!). Also note that this poster has been paperbacked. What IS paperbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good. Prior to paperbacking, the poster was never folded, and it had a diagonal tear in the top left corner, and a 7" irregular tear in the lower left border, running into the first inset image at bottom left. There were some creases, tears, smudges, and scuffs scattered in the image, with pinholes, smudges, tears, and tiny areas of paper loss around the edges of the poster. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to paperbacking. As described above, the poster was nicely backed around a decade ago, but was framed on a wall in sunlight where the reds changed to a pink or yellow! Because the restoration paint on the two tears in the left border described above is different from the ink of the poster, you can now see that restoration paint, because it remains a reddish color. So the purchaser of this poster has three options: They can leave the poster exactly as it is and display it and enjoy it! Or they can have a restorer change the pink or yellow areas to their original red, which would require extensive paint restoration, but a talented professional can do so in such a way that few people would be aware of the extent of the restoration. Or, they can have a restorer simply touch up the foldlines and tear so that the color in those areas matches the yellow or pink color of the background. Please consider all of the above (and study our super-sized image closely) BEFORE placing a bid on this rare and desirable poster! Learn More about condition grades
