The two fights between Muhammad Ali and Sonny Liston for boxing's World Heavyweight Championship were among the most anticipated, watched and controversial fights in the sport's history. Sports Illustrated magazine named their first meeting as the fourth greatest sports moment of the twentieth century. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this is an extremely rare poster. We have only auctioned one in all our years of auctioning and that was in 2006! Note also that this is one of a collection of 6 one-sheets from film versions of professional boxing matches! In the days before such events moved to network television, top boxing matches would be filmed at ringside and then shown later in movie theaters, complete with commentary. Such posters are far more rare than posters from movies. Our consignor collected these six over many years, and they are being offered in 6 separate auctions. This is a rare opportunity to acquire any or all of these 6 posters! Condition: good. The poster is lightly rippled throughout and there are some faint drip stains at lower left. There are pairs of staple holes around the edges and scattered vertically at left and right, and some of the pairs of staple holes are surrounded by a small amount of discoloration (see our image). This is the kind of poster that responds really well to restoration. It is likely that much or most of the rippling could be addressed through linenbacking and the small areas of discoloration can be removed chemically during the process, and after proper restoration the very rare poster will display quite well, but of course see our super-sized image and bear in mind the poster's condition and the cost of restoration before bidding on it.
