Note that this movie is a remake of the classic 1939 French movie, "Le Jour se Leve" starring Jean Gabin, which many consider to be one of the very first French film noirs, which themselves were inspired by 1930s U.S. gangster movies. The movie closely follows the plot and format of the 1939 original, which begins with a man barricading himself in an apartment with weapons and defying the police to capture him, and then the rest of the movie is a flashback explaining how he found himself in this deadly situation.
