The Gaucho, the 1927 F. Artist: Mandiville
Important Added Info: Note that we have only previously auctioned one example of this one-sheet, and that was 30 years ago, when it sold for $3,680! This is not that poster. This poster was trimmed to just the artwork. A talented restorer recreated the missing borders and the text at the bottom, and it was very well done. The exact proportions of the borders are not exactly the same as those in the one example of this poster we previously auctioned, but no one would notice that unless you closely compare them side by side. The magnificent artwork area of this poster IS original, but bear in mind that the rest of it was recreated before bidding on this poster. Finally, note that there is clearly an artist's signature in the lower left of the artwork, and it looks to be "Mandiville". But we could find no artist by that name. Clearly this person is a tremendous artist! If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here. Also note that this one-sheet measures 28 1/2" x 41" [72 x 104 cm].

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: fair to good. As noted above, the poster was trimmed to solely the image. It had some small paper loss scattered in the bottom border of the image and a small area of paper loss in the upper right background area and a few tiny bits in the top border. A really talented restorer recreated the missing borders and the missing printed material from the bottom. As noted above, they are not in the exact proportions to the one example of the poster we previously auctioned. Obviously, this poster has had considerable restoration, but the wonderful image area is original and this poster will display really well on the new owner's wall. However, bear in mind the extensive restoration it has had before placing a bid on it.
