An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Belgian Movie Poster (measures 24" x 33 1/2" [61 x 85 cm]) (Learn More) A Day at the Races, the classic 1937 Sam Wood horse racing sports gambling screwball comedy ("The year's big laugh, music and girl show!") starring the Marx Brothers (Groucho Marx, Chico Marx, and Harpo Marx), Allan Jones, Maureen O'Sullivan, Margaret Dumont, Esther Muir, Douglass Dumbrille, Sig Ruman, Leonard Ceeley, and Dorothy Dandridge (in an uncredited early role, in a sequence where a large number of young black African American men and women sing with Harpo). Note that this movie includes the classic comedy sequence where Groucho tries to buy a horse racing tip from Chico's Tootsie-Frootsie ice cream cart! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that we have only auctioned this poster twice before, once 23 years ago, when it auctioned for $1,955, and once two years ago, when it auctioned for $5,250! The art on it is unsigned, but it certainly looks exactly like the work of Al Hirschfeld, who did most of the U.S. posters for this movie. But because it is unsigned, we don't want to say for certain that it is Hirschfeld art. If anyone knows for sure either way about the artist, please e-mail us and we will post it here. We are also auctioning a 1940s re-release Belgian poster from this movie, in a separate auction. Note that this is a rare "pre-War" Belgian poster. Prior to World War II, Belgian posters were much larger than the ones from after the war, and they are extremely rare (because during WWII, there was a massive paper shortage in Belgium, and they took virtually every poster and map, and printed new posters on the backs of them!). What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good to fine. The poster was never folded. It had slight darkening around the edges, with a 1 1/2" tear in the lower left border. It had a few tiny creases and scuffs scattered in the image. Overall, the poster was in very good to fine condition prior to linenbacking. The restorer backed the poster "in the European style", meaning that they did not do restoration to the defects described above. Learn More about condition grades
