An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Belgian Movie Poster (measures 14 1/4" x 23 1/2" [36 x 60 cm]) (Learn More) The Barefoot Contessa, the 1954 Joseph L. Mankiewicz Italian/U.S. romantic melodrama ("'The World's most beautiful animal!'"; also written by Joseph L. Mankiewicz; told in flashbacks, it starts with the funeral of a glamorous movie star, and men in her life recall their interactions with her) starring Humphrey Bogart, Ava Gardner, Edmond O'Brien (winner of the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for this film), Marius Goring, Valentina Cortesa, Rossano Brazzi, Elizabeth Sellars, Warren Stevens, Bessie Love, and Riccardo Rioli. Note that this movie has a similar structure to that of Citizen Kane, which was written by screenwriter Joseph L. Mankiewicz's older brother, Herman J. Mankiewicz! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this is a very unusual Belgian poster! It measures approximately the same size as most Belgian posters of this time (this one measures 14 1/4" x 23 1/2" [36 x 60 cm]), but almost every Belgian poster from this time or before has a large blank area at the top (like U.S. window cards, for play date information and theater names). But this poster has no large blank area, and instead has a small even border on all four sides. More interestingly, we have seen a "regular" Belgian poster from this title, which does have the top blank area and a completely different image! Because the two posters have the exact same information on them, we believe both are from the 1954 first release, and we think that this poster was just created with no top blank area so that it could have a very long full image of Ava Gardner! If anyone knows more about this poster, please e-mail us and we will post it here. What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good. The poster had many horizontal folds near the center, with two near the top of the poster. It had a tax stamp in the lower right, which is no longer present. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was backed onto a thin linen with no excess, and at some point after it was backed, it acquired many brown dot water stains around the edges, and some water stains across the bottom and dot water stains in the top background areas (see our image). If I owned this great poster, I would have it removed from the linen and re-restored and re-linenbacked. But please read our description above and look at our super-sized image before placing a bid on this poster. Learn More about condition grades
