Date Sold 9/11/2016Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. a lot of 3 unfolded 19x22 special posters of "heavy men". Note that these lot contains some pretty remarkable posters! We are currently auctioning a total of 27 special posters (in a total of 7 lots), each of which picture a number of top actors who appeared in studios in the mid 1920s. Each poster has a heading at the top: leading men, heavy men, children, juveniles, character comedians, ingenues, character women, leading women, character men, feature women, and second women. Our consignor purchased them from a man in Hollywood who said they originally hung in the commissary of the legendary Culver Studios, but they don't have any sort of identification on the front or back (other than the heading and the names of the stars pictured). It makes perfect sense that these could have been from Culver Studios, because it was built in 1918 by Thomas Ince, and was intended to be the grandest Hollywood studio at that time (its main building was modeled after George Washington's Mount Vernon home!). He operated it until his death in 1924, when his widow sold it to Cecil B. DeMille, who changed it to "DeMille Studios". Exactly when are these posters from? It is very hard to know for certain, but a great tip off is that Boris Karloff, William Powell, and George Bancroft are billed as "heavy men" and not as "leading men". That would greatly indicate that they come from the mid 1920s, because by the later 1920s, Powell and Bancroft were getting leading roles. But we suppose that these could be from anywhere up to 1927, because these are certainly all silent stars. It seems likely that the exact story behind these posters is lost in the sands of time! We certainly hope that those who buy these posters (whether they buy one of the seven lots or all seven) will display them, because together they form a remarkable assembly of 1920s stars (and we have never seen other posters like them!). If anyone knows more about these posters, please e-mail us and we will post it here. Note that because these posters are quite old and almost surely one of a kind, we will ship them in large flat packages and not roll them into tubes. Please bear this extra expense in mind before placing a bid. Measurements: 19" x 22"Condition: very good. Each of these special posters was printed on a heavy stock and were then mounted to a thin linen. The thin linen is separating from the back, but it is completely unnecessary and can be easily removed and discarded. The posters have some slight border wear, but overall, they have survived really well considering their great age (see our images)! Learn More about condition grades Titles included:
