An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Swedish Movie Poster (measures 28 1/4" x 39 1/2" [72 x 100 cm]) (Learn More) The Calgary Stampede, the 1925 Herbert Blache silent Canada rodeo cowboy murder romantic melodrama ("Two big shows in one!"; "Here it is!! As advertised in the Saturday Evening Post"; "Filmed at the actual Calgary Stampede, Calgary Canada"; about the champion "Roman rider" of the U.S., who goes to Canada to compete in the legendary Calgary Stampede, and he falls in love with a French Canadian girl, but her father disapproves, and when the father is killed, the cowboy is blamed for the crime; he spends the rest of the movie on the run, but he manages to win the Roman race at the stampede, clear his name, and get his girl back by the end of the movie!) starring Hoot Gibson, Virginia Brown Faire, Clark Comstock, Ynez Seabury, and Jim Corey. Note that the Calgary Stampede is one of Canada's greatest tourist attractions! It began as an exhibition in 1886, transitioned to a "stampede rodeo" in 1912 (where Hoot Gibson won the steer roping contest), before finally combining the two aspects in 1923. In 1925, Hoot Gibson convinced Universal to shoot this film in Calgary, making it one of the earliest films financed and produced by a Hollywood Studio, but shot entirely outside of the U.S. Hoot was the Grand Marshall for the Parade and other events in 1925, and this film helped publicize the Calgary Stampede to international audiences, and make "stampede" synonymous with a rodeo (rather than just wild animals running amok). It steadily increased in size, and by the 1970s, attracted over a million visitors each year, and has continued to do so ever since. This film is often advertised as "Two Big Shows in One" because audiences were able to see the movie and the Stampede! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this is one of a collection of ten Swedish posters we were consigned by a very longtime western collector. Nine of the Swedish posters are from Hoot Gibson cowboy movies and one is from a Tom Mix cowboy movie. All were backed decades ago on a thin linen, and are generally in pretty nice condition. This is a rare opportunity to purchase one or more of these very rare posters (they are in ten separate auctions). What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster had two horizontal folds and two evenly spaced vertical folds. There was a 15" vertical tear near the center of the top border that extended into Gibson's face, but there was no paper loss. It had tiny paper loss at the crossfolds and some small tears. It had some creases and faint stains around the edges. Someone wrote the English language title of the movie in the left of the bottom border. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. Many years ago, the poster was backed onto a thin linen with no excess. Learn More about condition grades
