A Linenbacked French Special Poster (measures 30 3/4" x 46" [78 x 117 cm]) (Learn More) Le Monopole Est la Cause de la Crise Du Tabac (literally translates to "The Monopoly is the Cause of the Tobacco Crisis"), the circa 1927 French poster complaining about a tobacco crisis, and featuring art of distressed people (a priest praying, a despondent worker and a depressed gentleman), and a bowing Asian "Pierrot" (Pierrot is a French "sad clown"pantomime character) and a quote from a French folk song ("I have no light left") Artist: P. Carrere Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster had pretty minor fold wear. It had tiny paper loss in bottom blank corners, with a 1" tear in the far right of the bottom blank border. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. The restorer backed the poster "in the European style", meaning that they did not do restoration to the defects described above. Note that the restorer left a tiny bit of excess linen around all four sides of the poster (they left a small border in order to protect the poster from handling damage, but they did not leave a larger border, to allow it to more easily fit in a frame). The poster also picked up scuff marks in the top left blank corner, which could surely be cleaned off or covered over without re-backing the poster. Learn More about condition grades
