Date Sold 12/19/2023Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Folded One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 28" x 41" [71 x 104 cm]) (Learn More) Kentucky Minstrels (released in the U.S. as "Life is Real"), the 1934 John Baxter English black African American musical ("Greatest colored picture in screen history!") starring Nina Mae McKinney, Debroy Somers (billed as "Debro Somers and His Band"), Harry Scott, Eddie Whaley (billed as "Scott and Whaley"), and C. Denier Warren. This was an English movie about plantation life in America's Kentucky, and it included many negative racial stereotypes, including a blackface minstrel show. However, the movie had actual black African Americans in some roles, including Nina Mae McKinney, who had achieved fame in the U.S., but she left the U.S. to go to England to make this movie (but it is unclear how big a role she had in the movie). Harry Scott and Eddie Whaley remained in England, where they joined the cast of the English radio show based on this movie, which ran all the way until 1950 (another U.S. singer/actor, Isaac Hatch, also was in the radio show). A television show based on this radio show aired from 1958 to 1978, titled "Black and White Minstrel Show". If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that ANY movie paper items from this movie are incredibly rare. We have only previously auctioned a local theater poster (which had a double bill of this movie and the 1934 Imitation of Life) and a single English still from this movie (and NO other movie paper of any kind) until we received this one-sheet! We don't know that we will ever again see another first release poster from this movie (or even a re-release!), and that is sad, because this only poster we have ever auctioned bills it as the "Greatest Colored Picture in Screen History". Also note that this one-sheet measures 28" x 41" [71 x 104 cm]. Condition: good to very good. The poster was printed like a window card with a large blank area at the top where theaters could put their name and play dates. There is much lighter ink transfer from coming into contact with the bottom of the poster, but fortunately it is solely in the blank area. There are pinholes, many creases and some tears around the edges with a few small brown stains in the top blank area. Learn More about condition grades
