A Group of 16 Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Photolobbies (11x14; LCs; measures 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]) (Learn More) Quo Vadis, the 1951 Mervyn LeRoy historical Rome Italy sword-and-sandal romantic adventure epic ("MGM's 'Quo Vadis', Mightiest Technicolor Picture of All Time"; "Based on the Novel by Henryk Sienkiewicz"; nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award; about a Roman commander serving under Nero who falls in love with a beautiful Christian hostage, and that makes him question his loyalty to Rome) starring Robert Taylor (as Marcus Vinicius), Deborah Kerr (as Lygia), Leo Genn (nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for this film; as Petronius), Peter Ustinov (nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for this film; as Nero), Patricia Laffan (as Poppaea), Buddy Baer (as Ursus), Marina Berti, and Rosalie Crutchley NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that this set contains 16 photolobbies, 8 with a vertical orientation, 7 with a horizontal orientation, and a text one with information about how to use these photolobbies. BUT IT IS NOT A COMPLETE SET. We previously auctioned a set with 18 photolobbies, and that one had two horizontal ones that are not here. And of course, we don't know if there were even more than 18 in the complete set. Please do not bid on these thinking it is a complete set of 16, because there were at least two others. Also note that on this classic movie, and on several other major releases of the 1950s, MGM issued two entirely different sets of lobby cards! One set was the kind that is regularly seen. The other kind was a "photolobby" set with glossier color scenes from the movie, most often entirely different from the other set, and sometimes the photolobbies were black and white photos that had been hand-colored prior to production. The photolobbies are at least as rare as the regular lobby cards! Note that in the 1930s and 1940s, MGM issued yet a third kind of color 11" x 14", called a "color glos" 11" x 14", but these were on a photo paper, whereas the 1950s photolobbies are on regular lobby card-like stock. Condition: good to very good. Most of the cards, including the title card, are in pretty nice condition with just a few light creases and/or light scuff marks scattered in various areas. The card with Taylor on the chariot has several tears of varying lengths around the edges that have been repaired with tape from the back and a foreign ratings stamp at lower right. The card with Ustinov choking Laffan has slight discoloration around the edges due to exposure to moisture and a collector's sticker on back. The card with the royal court has some slight discoloration at left. Overall, most of the cards are in pretty nice condition and a few noted above have the noted defects, and the cards in nice condition have no tape whatsoever on the front or back, and they never have had any restoration of any kind!
