Date Sold 12/12/2019Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Insert Movie Poster (measures 14" x 36" [36 x 91 cm]) (Learn More) Hula, the 1927 Victor Fleming silent tropical Hawaii romantic love triangle melodrama ("Adapted from Doriz Anderson from the novel by Armine von Tempski"; Clara Bow is the daughter of a pineapple plantation owner in Hawaii, and when a handsome English engineer shows up, she falls in love, and actively pursues him, but then it turns out he is married, and his wife shows up, but that doesn't deter Clara!) starring Clara Bow (in the title role as Hula Calhoun), Clive Brook, Arlette Marchal, Arnold Kent, Patricia DuPont, and Duke Kahanamoku (who was a legendary Hawaiian five-time Olympic medalist and actor who is credited with popularizing the sport of surfing). Note that Clara Bow was the most famous "flapper girl" of the mid to late 1920s (she became known as "The It Girl" after the character she played based on the popular novel by Elinor Glyn). She had a major role in Wings, and was Paramount's biggest star at that time. But she had a notorious private life and seemingly "settled down" when she married cowboy star Rex Bell in 1931 (she had two children and she retired from movies), but sadly in 1949 she went into a mental institution after a failed suicide attempt (she had had psychiatric issues for quite some time) and she was released but never returned to her family, and lived alone until her death in 1965. Important Added Info: Note that first release 1927 movie posters from this movie are incredibly rare. We have only previously auctioned some lobby cards, jumbo lobby cards, and stills from this movie until we received this insert! What IS gelbacking? Learn More Condition: good. The poster was attached to a backing board, and it was removed, which caused surface paper loss on the back, and left some staining scattered throughout, but fortunately not in Bow's face. It had some pinholes, tears, and small paper loss around the edges, with some scattered in the image. It had staining in Bow's chest and in large parts of her arms, and also in her belly, with small paper loss in the middle of her belly, extending into the top of the grass skirt. Fortunately, there was no staining in Bow's face. Overall, the poster was in fair condition prior to restoration. A talented restorer gel backed the poster (meaning they backed the poster onto a gel material) and they then performed restoration to the above defects, and then removed the gel backing, so that the poster still looks and feels like an original poster (and it is!), with no backing at all. Given the poster's extensive defects described above, the restorer did a pretty good job, and you can clearly see signs of the defects and the restoration, but the poster displays pretty well, as long as you are accepting of the defects you can see on this incredibly rare poster (see our super-sized images to get a good sense of exactly how the poster looks now).
