An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More) The Fatal Hour, the 1940 William Nigh Asian detective crime mystery murder thriller ("Original story by Hugh Wiley") starring Boris Karloff (as Mr. Wong), Marjorie Reynolds, Grant Withers, Charles Trowbridge, Frank Puglia, and Richard Loo. Note that there was a character called "Mr. Wong" in the 1935 movie "The Mysterious Mr. Wong", and he was played by Bela Lugosi. In 1938, "Mr. Wong, Detective" was made, starring Boris Karloff in the title role, and this Mr. Wong was an Chinese detective and had no relationship to the earlier Bela Lugosi character (this was based on a series of "James Lee Wong" stories in Collier's Magazine written by Hugh Wiley). This proved popular, and there were four more movies with Karloff playing Mr. Wong in 1939 and 1940. In 1940, he left the role, and one more movie was made, "Phantom of Chinatown", starring Keye Luke in the lead role, but that was the last of the series (perhaps it was the loss of Karloff that ended the series, or perhaps 1940 was not a good time for U.S. movies with an Asian hero). The poster had some water stains near the middle of the vertical fold, in Karloff's upper cheek, by his mouth and in his chin. There were also water stains in the left of the top horizontal fold, falling in Karloff's forehead. There were also some smaller stains on parts of the other folds that were not as noticeable. There were small tears, separation, and tiny paper loss on parts of many folds, and there was once tape on the back of those areas. There were many pinholes around the edges. Overall, the poster was in fair condition prior to linenbacking. The person who backed the poster pretty much just backed it as is, performing slight fold restoration, but leaving alone the water stains described above. They also did not add any excess linen around the edges. One could display the poster as is, but the defects are clearly noticeable, or one might choose to have it re-backed, but bear these defects in mind before placing a bid on this poster.
