An Original Vintage Theatrical 7 3/4" x 9 1/4" [20 x 23 cm] Movie Still (Learn More) Victor Hugo's Les Miserables, the classic 1935 Richard Boleslawski epic prisoner-on-the-run-hunted-throughout-the-years melodrama ("The greatest human story ever written becomes a screen triumph awaited by millions"; nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award; based on the French novel by Victor Hugo, which was also the source for the long-running Broadway play; produced by Darryl F. Zanuck) starring Fredric March (as Jean Valjean), Charles Laughton (as Inspector Javert), Sir Cedric Hardwicke (as Bishop Bienvenu), Rochelle Hudson (as Cosette), Frances Drake (as Eponine), Florence Eldridge (as Fantine), John Beal (as Marius), Ferdinand Gottschalk (as Thenardier), Vernon Downing (as Brissac), and John Carradine. Note that there was a 1980 French musical stage play adapted from this classic book and movie, but it did not do well. In 1985, it was significantly expanded and changed into an English language play, which has gone on to become one of the most successful plays of all time, in London, on Broadway, and all over the world! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that this still was consigned to us by legendary collector/dealer Marty Davis! Marty was hired in 1972 to evaluate the entire collection of W. Ward Marsh (1893-1971), who was the film critic for the Cleveland Plain Dealer newspaper from 1919, until his retirement in 1970. In 1919 Marsh wrote his first of 23,000 movie reviews for the Plain Dealer. Marsh died less than a year after his retirement in 1970. His library, and photographic and memorabilia archives were given to the proprietor of Cleveland's finest bookstore. Marty Davis was the first person with a background in film history and collectibles to examine the archives. He worked for three to four hours a day, for six months, and his compensation was his pick of the archives. This still is from the W. Ward Marsh archives, and it was stamped on the back by Marty Davis to indicate that it came from this legendary collection. Also note that this still has been trimmed and it now measures 7 3/4" x 9 1/4" [20 x 23 cm]. Condition: fair to good. Three of the borders were trimmed off and the still has changed to a sepia color.
