An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Movie Paper Banner (measures 24" x 82" [61 x 208 cm]) (Learn More)

The African Queen, the classic 1952 (the movie briefly played in December of 1951, no doubt to qualify for the 1952 Academy Awards, but most sources list it as a 1952 movie) John Huston (nominated for the Best Director Academy Award for this film) English/U.S. romantic World War I (WWI) military adventure thriller ("Actually filmed in the splendor and dangers of the Belgian Congo!"; "The mightiest adventure ever filmed!"; "Based on the novel 'The African Queen' by C.S. Forester") starring Humphrey Bogart (winner of the Best Actor Academy Award for this film), Katharine Hepburn (nominated for the Best Actress Academy Award for this film), Robert Morley, Peter Bull, Theodore Bikel, Walter Gotell, Peter Swanwick, and Richard Marner. Note that although this movie opened at the end of 1951, all of the original release U.S. movie paper for this title has a 1952 NSS number (but has a 1951 copyright date).

If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know.
Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this paper banner! Also note that this banner is a silkscreen printed poster with an actual color photo which has neatly been "tipped in" (glued to the left side of the poster). Paper banners were sometimes made in this way at that time, and it makes for a striking poster, and few people would realize that it is not printed on a single piece, unless they examine the poster closely. Note that the silkscreen portions of this poster usually pick up scuff marks far more easily than other posters of this period (this was caused by the method of silkscreen printing, and is very common on these posters, and is not considered a major defect, unless it is very noticeable or distracting).

Note that this poster ships in a very long tube (at least 33" long, but possibly 50" long or more). Therefore the shipping for this poster will be more than that for a poster that ships in a tube 32" or shorter, and possibly much more. Please bear this added shipping expense in mind before bidding on this poster. You can tell how long of a tube this poster needs to ship in by looking at the shorter dimension of its length and width and then adding 4" to that (so a 47" x 63" poster will need to ship in a 51" long tube).

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good. The poster had many partial vertical creases in the image area at left, plus many creases and scuffs scattered throughout the rest of the poster. Both of these defects are quite common with paper banners from this time that have tipped-in images. Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to linenbacking. Someone backed the poster pretty much "as is" without any real restoration. Backing has made some of the above defects less noticeable. In addition, the poster was somewhat roughly handled after backing, and it acquired some light additional creases. Please read the above carefully and look at our super-sized image before bidding on this extremely rare poster. One would prefer to find a better example of the poster, but it might take a lifetime to find, since we have never auctioned another one, and may never auction another one again!
