A Limited Edition Art Print (with art by Jason Edmiston; 3/175; measures 18" x 24" [46 x 61 cm]) (Learn More) Mad, the classic humor magazine ("Humor in a jugular vein") from the 1950s to the present. This comic was published by Bill Gaines (William Gaines) through his company, EC Comics (E.C. Comics), which he inherited from his father in 1947. It was originally a comic book edited by Harvey Kurtzman, and it was one of the famous EC Comics (E.C. Comics) that were banned in the mid-1950s, due to excessive horror content. At that point, publisher Gaines canceled most of his comic book titles, and turned Mad into a magazine with its 24th issue. Unfortunately, he and Kurtzman soon had a falling out, and Al Feldstein, who had been Gaines' writing partner on the Mad comic books (and Feldstein had edited Panic, EC's own imitation of Mad), took over, and the magazine became one of the great success stories of the 1950s and 1960s (led by its trademark character, Alfred E. Neuman, a goofy looking guy whose slogan was "What, me worry?"), with a circulation in the millions at its peak. Gaines never allowed any advertising of any kind in the magazine! In recent years, there was a "Mad" TV show which perfectly captures the spirit of the magazine! Artist: Jason Edmiston Important Added Info: Note that this art print has been hand-numbered 3/175! IMPORTANT! This is one of 293 "Second Chance Auctions"! What does that mean? Tim League, the consignor of all the prints in the 2,346 auctions (see below), knows that there will be a LOT of competition for some of the prints, and he wanted to give bidders a second chance to get some of the more desirable ones! So, on the 293 auctions that have this paragraph on them, it means that they are prints where there is an earlier auction for a different example of this print (and that earlier auction will have almost surely already ended BEFORE this auction), and this way, those bidders who "missed out" on the earlier example have this second chance to get this different example (but of course, they are not exactly the same, and the earlier example has a lower number)! Please know that 100% of the proceeds from the sale will go towards paying staff of the Alamo Drafthouse and paying debt and expenses accrued during the COVID closures. An important note about the condition of the print in this auction (or, in the case of 25 of the auctions, prints). It comes from the personal collection of Tim League, and it has been carefully stored since it was first printed. In the case of all but 46 of the 2,344 of the prints, it is in wonderful condition, and likely looks exactly as it did when it was printed, and we give all those our "fine" grade, which is the highest grade we give (and which equates to most dealers' "mint" grade). In the case of a very small number of the prints (46 in all!), it acquired one or more defects, and in those cases we give it a lower grade, and explain in words what those defects are.
