Civil Defense Week also provides the opportunity to promote public interest and understanding of civil defense to protect people, freedom, and peace. The first Civil Defense Week was approved by President Eisenhower and was held from September 9th through the 15th, 1956. Note that civil defense began as an organized non-military effort to prepare Americans for military attack and other disastrous events, but late in the 20th Century the term and practice of civil defense was replaced with emergency management and homeland security.
