An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More) Ava Gardner was an actress from the 1940s to the 1980s. Surprisingly, Hollywood did not recognize the talents of this beautiful actress for years, because she had a long string of tiny or uncredited roles before she became a star! Some of her movies include: Mogambo (nominated for the Best Actress Academy Award for this film), The Killers, On the Beach, The Barefoot Contessa, Bhowani Junction, and many others! She was married three times to famous celebrities: Mickey Rooney, Artie Shaw, and Frank Sinatra. She also struck a friendship with Ernest Hemingway, who, after witnessing Gardner swim naked in his pool, told his staff "the water is not to be emptied"! She passed away in 1990 at the age of 67. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this is a special "personality" one-sheet. Normally, studios made 22" x 28" size personality posters that were vertical in orientation, but looked like half-sheets, and had a head and shoulders image of a popular star (these were made from the early 1910s through the mid 1940s). Apparently, MGM decided to revive this after World War II, creating personality one-sheets of their top stars. We know that they made a Lana Turner in 1947, a Clark Gable in 1949, an Ava Gardner in 1950, and there were likely others (perhaps they did one each year, so therefore, there would surely be a 1948 one). They are quite rare! Unlike the Clark Gable and the Lana Turner, this poster is specifically dated 1950. If anyone knows more about these posters, please e-mail us and we will post it here. Note that this poster is incredibly rare! We have previously auctioned one of this poster, two of the Clark Gable posters like this, and one of the Lana Turner. The one time we auctioned another example of this poster, it sold for $1,675! What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster was never folded. It had a 12" tear in the bottom center and a 2" tear next to it. It had tape stains in the blank borders, where it was once apparently taped to a wall. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was well backed, and it displays well, but the glue in the bottom border was not perfectly done, and the poster is very slightly "lifting" from the linen in a small area in the left of the bottom border (any restorer could easily re-glue this area without re-backing the poster).
