An Original Vintage Theatrical Folded Australian Daybill Movie Poster (db; measures 13 1/4" x 29 3/4" [34 x 76 cm]) (Learn More) Mad Max, the classic 1979 (released in the U.S. in 1980, and released in Italy as "Interceptor") George Miller Australian post-apocalyptic action crime thriller ("The Maximum Force of the Future."; "When the gangs take over the highway... Remember he's on your side"; "The last law in a world gone out of control. Pray that he's out there somewhere."; "Music by Brian May"; "Written by James McCausland and George Miller") starring Mel Gibson (in the title role as Mad Max Rockatansky), Joanne Samuel, Hugh Keays-Byrne (as Toecutter), Steve Bisley, Tim Burns, and Roger Ward NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this poster, which is a "country of origin" poster for this Australian movie, is REALLY bizarre! Why? Because this movie had a very limited first release in 1979, and the one-sheets and daybills for that release are a sort of purple color. When it became a big hit, a very limited number of orange posters were printed, and then "semi-gloss" blue posters were printed, all in 1979. In 1981, the movie had a major re-release, and full-gloss blue posters were printed for that re-release. SO WHAT MAKES THIS SO BIZARRE? At first glance, one would think it is the semi-gloss blue poster from 1979. But when you look at it, you see a patch to the left of Gibson's jacket that is clearly purple (and this is in the printing, and not something that was added to the poster!) So our best guess is that this is a very rare first release "purple" daybill, but that it has MAJOR FADING. So while this is a very rare poster, it has a very significant defect, and please bear that in mind before bidding on it (and also bear in mind that this is our best guess, and is not guaranteed to be correct).
UPDATED 06/21/2018: Note that two very long-time Australian daybill collectors have told us that they believe it is more likely that the uneven coloring on this poster is caused by a printing defect at the time that the poster was printed. That is definitely a possibility, so consider this as an alternate reason for the uneven coloring (see our image). Condition: fair. As noted above, we believe this to be a very rare first release "purple" daybill, but that it has MAJOR FADING. So while this is a very rare poster, it has a very significant defect, and please bear that in mind before bidding on it (and also bear in mind that this is our best guess, and is not guaranteed to be correct).
