eMoviePoster.comAuction History Result #177 HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL British quad 1959 different art of Devil in theater with scared girl! Date Sold 5/7/2002Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Theatrical Folded British Quad Movie Poster (Measures 30" x 40") (Learn More) House on Haunted Hill (some stills identify the movie as "House of Haunted Hill" but a collector tells us that he saw the film on the opening weekend and it was titled "House on Haunted Hill"), the 1959 William Castle haunted house horror thriller ("First film with the amazing new wonder Emergo [specially installed for this engagement] The thrills fly right into the audience!"; "The 13 greatest shocks of all time! Consult your doctor! Bring your seat belts! See it with someone with warm hands!") starring Vincent Price, Carol Ohmart, Richard Long, Alan Marshal, Elisha Cook Jr., Carolyn Craig, Julie Mitchum, and Leona Anderson. Note that the "gimmick" for this movie (Emergo) described above consisted of an actual fake skeleton that was pulled out from above the screen on a wire and dragged across the audience when the skeleton on the movie comes out of its box, and then it is reeled back in across the audience, making two trips. This required special equipment, and apparently many theaters chose not to install it, because the pressbook has special ads for it only for theaters that have the Emergo equipment. We have read that some of the theaters that DID install the equipment had it uninstalled, once teen boys learned of it, because they would come to the showings with slingshots and damage the skeleton with rocks or BBs! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that there is something VERY unusual about this poster! When it was originally printed, it had a black rectangle below the image that had "CERTIFICATE X" printed in that area. It also had a long tagline in the middle right that promoted the Emergo process. We don't know that the Emergo equipment was actually used in England at all (perhaps it was canceled after it met with the problems described above at U.S. showings months earlier), or maybe it was solely used at the London premiere. In any event, this poster (and the other three examples we have previously auctioned) were overprinted with a new tagline promoting a Louella Parsons quote, and the "certificate X" area was overprinted with solid black. Since it was done on all four examples, we suspect it was done on all surviving examples. If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here. Condition: very good. The poster was folded in half an extra time. There are minor creases in the foldlines and borders. There is some scuffing and a few small tears across the center horizontal foldline. There are a few tack holes in each corner. There are several small tears in the upper half of the right vertical foldline. There are tack holes in each corner. Learn More about condition grades
