An Original Vintage Theatrical Paperbacked Half-Sheet Movie Poster (1/2sh; measures 22" x 28") (Learn More) Dinner at Eight, the classic 1933 George Cukor New York City high society romantic comedy ("Greatest entertainment ever offered by stage or screen"; "From the Sam H. Harris stage play by George S. Kaufman and Edna Ferber"; about a rich couple who throw a dinner for a group of very different New York society types, and young Jean Harlow steals the show as the trophy girlfriend of rich Wallace Beery) starring Marie Dressler, John Barrymore, Wallace Beery, Jean Harlow, Lee Tracy, Lionel Barrymore, Edmund Lowe, Billie Burke, Madge Evans, Jean Hersholt, Karen Morley, and Phillips Holmes. Note that Phillips Holmes had made an impression in some movies in the late 1920s. In 1931, he would get the lead in the first version of "An American Tragedy", which made it seem like he would become a major star, but that didn't materialize. He had a major affair with Libby Holman, but that was certainly complicated, and when they broke up, she immediately married his brother! Oddly, years later, Holman would have another very complicated affair with Montgomery Clift, who played the same part in the remake of "An American Tragedy", re-titled "A Place in the Sun". Sadly, Holmes died in a plane crash in 1942. I am very surprised no one has made a movie about his life, or a joint movie about him and Libby Holman! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Note that because this poster was paperbacked onto a thicker paper backing, it CAN'T be sent rolled (someone could conceivably roll it or try to do so, but we think it would almost certainly damage it, so we will only send it in a large flat package, unless the buyer insists, and then they would be responsible for any damage). What IS paperbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. Prior to paperbacking, the poster had all of its blank borders trimmed off, and in addition, the bottom 3" of the image was trimmed off as well. But very fortunately, there was a second example of this poster which had much damage in the top, but the bottom was not so bad, so the owner of both posters used the bottom 3" from that second poster and combined it with this poster! There were some tack holes scattered in the left credits area and some smudges and scuffs scattered in the white background areas, and some in the bottom of the image, with just a few tiny dot stains and scuffs scattered in the images of the stars at middle right. Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to paperbacking. The poster was nicely backed by a really talented restorer, and it looks and displays great, although you can see slight signs of the above defects and the restoration of the above defects.
