Date Sold 8/18/2016Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Paperbacked Insert Movie Poster (measures 14" x 36" [36 x 91 cm]) (Learn More) Casey at the Bat, the 1927 Monte Brice silent New York Major League Baseball sports comedy ("Story by Hector Turnbull"; very loosely based on the classic poem by Ernest Lawrence Thayer) starring Wallace Beery (in the title role as 'Home Run' Casey), Ford Sterling, Zasu Pitts, Sterling Holloway, and Spec O'Donnell. Note that this movie owes as much to the larger-than-life Babe Ruth as it does to the classic poem! In it, Casey is a mighty home run hitter, who is signed by the New York Giants, and he starts to live the high life, buying drinks for everyone and romancing showgirls. At the climax of the movie, he comes to bat, and just like the Casey of the poem, he strikes out, but it turns out that the ball was doctored, and the result of the game is overturned! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that posters from this movie are incredibly rare! Four years ago, we auctioned one of the styles of the one-sheet, and in May of 2015, we auctioned the other style of the one-sheet, and it sold for $8,555! Other than those two posters, we had never had any poster from this movie, but now we have been consigned this insert! Note that this poster has been paperbacked. What is paperbacking? This means the poster was backed onto a paper backing (acid-free), that is similar in feel to that of the original poster (except somewhat heavier). It is a similar process to linenbacking, except that most collectors use linenbacking for one-sheets and paperbacking for half-sheets, inserts, window cards, and lobby cards. Also note that because this poster was paperbacked onto a thinner paper backing, it COULD be sent rolled, but we would MUCH prefer to send it in a large flat package (because we fear that rolling it, even into a wide tube, would have an excellent change of damaging it, so we will only send it in a tube if the buyer insists, and then they would be responsible for any damage), but otherwise, we will ship it in a large flat package, so bear that expense in mind before bidding on this poster. What IS paperbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. Prior to paperbacking, the poster had a tear 5" from the bottom border, running across the poster, and going through the "Adaptation by" credit. It also had pinholes and many smudges around the edges, with a few pinholes and faint smudges scattered throughout the image, with some in the title area. Overall, the poster was in fair to good condition prior to paperbacking. The poster was expertly restored by a top restorer, and now it displays really well, but you can see slight signs of the restoration. Learn More about condition grades
