Date Sold 5/15/2022Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. a lot of 3 issues of Photoplay, the leading movie magazine sold to the public from the 1910s through the 1940s ("The World's Leading Moving Picture Magazine"; "America's largest-selling movie magazine"). It began publication in 1909 as a thick 6 3/4" x 10" magazine, and within a year, it hit on its successful formula of running heavily illustrated stories about current movies and their stars. We don't know exactly when they switched to the full size, but it was some time around 1917. Each issue features a great full color cover of a leading star of the day, plus lots of interior publicity stories about current stars and movies with many color and black and white images throughout. Also, in every issue are many wonderful vintage ads, some in color and some in black and white, and sometimes the ads can be just as much fun as the original stories and pictures. Of course, some of the ads are from movies that were about to open, and in the early days of eBay, people would remove those full-page ads and auction them by themselves, and they would often sell for $10, $20, or more, just for a single movie ad removed from a magazine just like this! Note that for a brief time starting around 1940, Photoplay switched to a larger format that measured just under 11" x 14". But apparently this was not as popular with their readers as the regular magazine size, and so they switched back to that size around 2 years later (these larger issues are more scarce than the regular sized ones and more difficult to find in nice condition). Also note that during World War II, Photoplay combined with Movie Mirror and for a brief time, the title read "Photoplay combined with Movie Mirror", but then reverted back to simply being called "Photoplay". Note that the items in this lot are from the 1930s. We do not provide a list of these items, but there are images of all of them. Measurements: 9" x 11"Note that we have provided a picture of the front cover of each magazine, but no other images. Please know that these magazines are sealed in bags and are ready for shipping, and we cannot answer any questions about them or look through them for you, so please bid (or do not bid) based on the images we have provided. Condition: good. Please note that we briefly attempted to check to see if the magazines are complete and uncut, and we believe that they are. However, there is a slight possibility that we might have missed a small cut or a page that was neatly removed, and if that happens, you can return the magazines. We have solely provided an overall description of the condition of the magazine, but you can also refer to our super-sized images of the covers. Please bid (or not bid) based on that overall grade and by viewing the super-sized images. Learn More about condition grades Titles included:
