An Original Vintage Linenbacked World War II Poster (measures 28 1/4" x 39 3/4" [72 x 101 cm]) (Learn More) Be a Marine, the 1943 U.S. World War II (WWII) Marine Corps Women's Reserve recruitment poster ("Free a Marine to fight") featuring art of Colonel Ruth Streeter with background art of male Marines fighting in combat. The United States Marine Corps Women's Reserve was the World War II women's branch of the United States Marine Corps Reserve. It was authorized by Congress and signed into law by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on July 30th of 1942. Its purpose was to release officers and men for combat, and to replace them with women in U.S. shore stations for the duration of the war, plus six months. Ruth Cheney Streeter was appointed the first director and for her stewardship of the Reserve, the Marine Corps presented her with the Legion of Merit. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography.
