Note that this movie was Tarkovsky's first movie that was made partially outside of Russia, and we have been told that it was not released in Russia until 1988, even though it had been released at the Cannes Film Festival in 1983, had a New York City release in later 1983, and then had a wide release in many countries in 1984.
