A Linenbacked French Advertising Poster (measures 44 1/2" x 61" [113 x 155 cm]) (Learn More)

La Raphaelle, the 1908 French liquor alchohol advertising poster promoting the bonal aperitif La Raphaelle, which was first produced in the Dauphine region of France in 1865. Note that this poster features great J. Rosetti art of a man flying in a very early and primitive bi-plane, lassoing a bottle of La Raphaelle from an angry waiter passing beneath the airplane.
Artist: J. Rosetti
Important Added Info: Note that we have previously auctioned this poster once before, and the buyer of that poster has reconsigned it to us, so this is still the only example of this poster we have ever auctioned!

Note that that art on this poster is dated 1908, and we believe it is from that year. Apparently there was a shortage of paper in France at that time, because this poster was printed on the back of another poster (a practice that became common in Belgium and France during World War II, when there were huge paper shortages, but we did not know that this practice had been done in earlier times as well). The poster offered here was printed on the back of another poster, and it shows through noticeably in the blue background areas particularly, and there were very large letters on the back, so it makes for a lot of geometric shapes in the blue background area. See our image to better see exactly what bleed-through there is. Also note that this poster apparently originally measured 47" x 63", but much of its blank borders have been trimmed and it now measures 44 1/2" x 61" [113 x 155 cm].

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good. The poster was printed on the back of another poster, and there is significant bleed-through, as noted above. Also, much of the blank borders were trimmed off (see our image). The poster had tears and paper loss in the center, in the falling cup above the "A" of "RAPHAELLE", and it had some tears and paper loss in the chest of the man to the left of that. It had staining, creases, and tears around the edges and in the bottom center credits area. The poster was backed onto a thin linen with no excess, and restoration was performed to the tears and paper loss described in the lower part of the image, but there is still damage in the cup area. The poster can certainly be displayed and enjoyed just as it is, if one can accept its defects, but bear that in mind before placing a bid on this poster.
